The school’s founding dates back to 1881, when two Boston women named Sophia Packard and Harriet Giles began instructing an uninvolved group of African American women, the most of whom were former slaves, in the basement of an Atlanta church. After the American Civil War, the school was later moved to Fort McPherson, which had served as a Union training facility.

John D. Rockefeller, a businessman and philanthropist, provided funding for the school beginning in 1884, ensuring its development and safety. For Rockefeller’s wife’s mother, this institution is known as Spelman Seminary. In 1901, it started conferring degrees, and in 1924, it changed its name to Spelman College. An agreement that would later become known as the Atlanta University Center was signed in 1929 by Spelman College, Morehouse College (for African American boys), and Atlanta University.

The Spelman College and five other African American institutions in Atlanta are part of the Atlanta University Center, which also houses Spelman. These institutions share staff, students, and facilities. College Life

Spelman offers both unstructured and structured activities that are both unstructured and structured. Among the more than 80 student organizations at the school are community service and specific interest organizations. Student governments, marching bands, drama/theater groups, choirs, cheerleading squads, and intramural sports are all available at Morehouse.

There are 11 residence halls at Spelman College, and each one can house up to 1,400 students. Each hall is special and has its own distinctive characteristics and identities.
