WHO WAS EIRA FRANCIS DAVIES?

At Glynneath, South Wales, Eira Francis Davies was born on March 17, 1925, to Annie and David Davies. Eira left Wales in her early 20s to work as a Child Welfare Officer for The Society for The Overseas Settlement of British Women (S.O.S.B.W.) in London.

The S.O.S.B.W. was established in 1919 as part of the British government’s post-war economic reforms to encourage the migration of female workers to former white settler colonies. She left for Canada in September 1955 and returned to the UK in 1956, settling back in her hometown of Glynneath as the Assistant Director of Social Services for West Glamorgan.

Eira recognized the importance and transforming power of education, particularly for women from nations where their economic, social, and cultural backgrounds may provide difficulties and hurdles to achieving their full potential. Eira, a woman of independent resources, endowed a sizeable sum to Swansea University in 2012 to create a scholarship in her honor. Her goal was to assist these ladies in realizing their potential in order to better their neighborhood and country at large.

Eira showed a deep interest in the ladies who received her scholarship. Although she preferred to maintain her anonymity, she never disclosed herself as their benefactor and enjoyed getting to know them at the annual Scholarship Winners Banquet.

On September 9, 2020, Eira Francis Davies, who was 95, passed away. As a tribute to Eira’s legacy and outstanding vision, Swansea University is happy to continue to offer the Eira Francis Davies Scholarship.
