What made you select University of Canterbury?
The second-oldest university in New Zealand was founded in 1873 and is called the University of Canterbury. Graduates of UC’s internationally acclaimed programs, which promote professional excellence and critical thinking across a wide range of disciplines, are in high demand worldwide and attend prestigious graduate programs. UC provides opportunities for experiential learning beyond the classroom, including field science internships, service learning, and courses that connect you to the largest network of field stations in New Zealand.
Clubs at UC are the best part of being a student.
I consider my time at University of Canterbury to be among my greatest experiences to date. With clubs, they make it incredibly simple to adjust to university life. The clubs are very welcoming to exchange students. It’s entertaining because of the clubs. There are more than 100 clubs to pick from covering a broad range of topics.
It’s also the ideal school for those who love being outside. Although it’s not in your backyard, skiing is just two hours away. It’s reachable, and lots of other students are attempting to visit. Furthermore, surfing is incredibly close. Fly fishing is very special. There are countless backpacking options within an 8-hour drive.

greater options to live off campus, perhaps in a different hall. Often, relationships can only develop with other exchange students because you’re stuck in this place with all these other students.
Canterbury University in New Zealand
The University of Canterbury played a significant role in the amazing experience I had during my time in New Zealand. The personnel is very helpful and kind. When I was having trouble organizing my class schedule, so many staff members and students offered to assist me. Excellent housing is available close to the campus.
I was able to form wonderful relationships and friendships because of the wonderful community that the housing offered. I spent a lot of time at the campus’s fantastic rec center, which is stunning. Canterbury offers excellent classes; I learned a ton there! There was plenty of opportunity to explore New Zealand on foot. All in all, the opportunities I had in New Zealand were amazing.

I was quite pleased with the program all around. The apartments’ WiFi was spotty at times, but IT services was excellent at assisting residents when an issue arose.
Explore what nature has to offer (and study too!)
It’s undeniable that my semester at the University of Canterbury was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Before I left, I knew very little about New Zealand, but as soon as I arrived, I could not help but feel as though I was living in a fantasy country with endless places to discover.
Because the school system was so different from what I had been accustomed to in the USA, I found the academics to be quite difficult. The most intriguing aspect of this was that I had more time to study and, as a result, more time to spend traveling the nation because I had fewer homework assignments.
Professors and everyone else I spoke with about studying overseas in New Zealand even encouraged this. When you live in Christchurch, exploring the south island is quite simple.
For a longer spring or fall break trip, or just a quick weekend getaway, most locations are accessible by car. It’s also easy to plan trips like this because renting a car only requires you to be 18 years old. In addition to driving, you can go anyplace by bus. The regions of the nation that required a backpack trip to see were my favorites.
Despite having grown up in Colorado, I had never gone backpacking before, so I’m really happy that the UC CUTC (tramping club) gave me the chance to do so. Every weekend, they plan a ton of trips, and you can even rent gear from them.
This makes tramping easy to try, even for inexperienced people like me. Overall, because of the experiential curriculum and the breathtaking surroundings of the city, I would highly suggest studying here.

My only wish is that there had been an oven in the student housing. It took some getting used to living with just a stove and microwave!
New Zealand’s greatest school
I’m a French student from a remote location. They extend a warm welcome to me. Your success at UC is important to everyone. There are numerous clubs where you can socialize and practice your English with a wide range of people. When it comes to foreigners, people are really friendly.
Although it can be challenging at first to follow the courses, the teachers are very thorough. Additionally, my confidence in speaking English is growing quickly. The University of Canterbury’s study abroad program is something I strongly recommend.
Wonderful encounter
As a French student, this nation is very remote from everything I am familiar with, but you can be certain that the University of Canterbury will provide you with some of the greatest experiences of your life. The country is stunning and untamed, and the courses are incredibly fascinating. Furthermore, a large number of individuals in the University of Canterbury’s international services will look after you and are available to answer your inquiries.
Thumbs-up for New Zealand and UC!
My time at the University of Canterbury was fantastic! After five years, I’m almost finished with my Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and Business Administration from Germany. I came to UC to extend my horizons, enroll in classes that I was unable to complete at home, and visit the stunning nation that I had been hearing so much about.
I took three classes that I really enjoyed: Maori, Engineering in Developing Communities, and Rock Climbing. They offered me the chance to broaden my knowledge and make wonderful new friends, and they were very different from what I had studied at home.
Less work than what I was used to and what I expected was required for the classes. I had ample time to travel and take in the South Island thanks to this.
Christchurch’s location makes it easy to get anywhere in the South Island quickly. I went hiking, climbing, kayaking, and general country exploration on a number of weekends. Truly, New Zealand is as breathtaking as everyone claims! Although Christchurch isn’t the most fascinating city per se, the surrounding areas more than make up for it!

We took a three-week break in April. I was able to travel to the North Island and the extreme south of the South Island as a result of this. When comparing the two islands, I have to admit that I much prefer the South Island, mostly because I enjoy being outside and the scenery there is breathtaking. The largest city on the South Island is Christchurch, from which flights to Auckland, Wellington, and even Australia can be found at very low prices.
I also thought that UC’s abundance of clubs was a really great feature. I met a lot of amazing people when I joined the wine club, tramping, climbing, and kayaking groups. I was also able to travel further and spend more time outside thanks to it.
The residence halls are near the campus, and the gym and classes are accessible on foot. Nonetheless, Ilam Apartments—where the majority of international students reside—are comparatively pricey. To save costs, you could also look for a room on your own, but Ilam is a great option if you want to be near the campus and interact with lots of international students!
I had an incredible time in New Zealand all in all! I am grateful to UC for enabling this.

UC Enjoyable
I’m so grateful that I had the opportunity to study abroad at UC. Here, I got to know so many incredible people, traveled every weekend, and continued my education all while having a great time. There is nowhere else I would have chosen to study abroad.
